Brush Painting Essentials (3) - Rice Paper

Rice Paper

Chinese paper is often referred to as rice paper. There are different types of rice paper: some are rough and absorb ink quickly like a sponge; while others have a smooth surface which resists ink. The nature of paper will dictate the quantity of ink used for strokes on the paper.

Brush Painting Essentials (2) - Chinese Ink

Chinese Ink

When an ink cake is grounded on a stone slab with fresh water, ink of various consistencies can be prepared, depending on the amount of water used.  An experienced artist can use ink  alone to create a whole range of texture, weight and coloring in a subject.

Brush Painting Essentials (1) - Chinese Brush

Chinese Brush
A Chinese brush is somewhat different from the brush used for watercolor painting in the West. The Chinese brush has a finer tip which can be used to deal with a wide range of subjects and to produce the variations in line required by different styles.

Anna's Brush Painting (2) - Seeking Siddhartha

Seeking Siddhartha
(watercolor)

This painting is in the freehand (寫意, xie yi) style of Southern China.  Siddhartha is the name of Buddha.  He is always portrayed sitting on or near lotus, and thus the title of the painting.

Brush Painting and I

I find my passion and inspiration for painting in nature. Through the controlled brush strokes, I seek to express the philosophy of benevolence through tranquil images of trees and blossoms. In this way, the viewer may gain a sense of the natural harmonies infused in the subjects of her painting.
